Notice the vertical distance between the coffin lockers. No, I am not in the pic. My rack was to the right of the open coffin locker.

USS Ouelette berthing area. This ship had a fancy berthing area as it has rack curtains. The lockers at the far end of the pic are the lockers for the top racks which are not coffin lockers. Racks are stacked three high. The inboard side of each rack is attached to two stantions along the rack length. There's a set of racks on each side of the stantion. On the DDG I was on I kept a rolled up foul weather jacket (field jacket) underneath the centre of the outboard edge of tha mattress. The purpose for doing this was to keep me from being thrown out of the rack. You had the mattress, pillow, bottom and top sheet and a wool blanket. Each rack also had a small single tube flourescent light.
