Hell's Bell Tolls For You
Printer paper with a centred 5 x 7 inch square. Paint is acrylic. Feb 2004.
I had a heck of a time with this one as the original picture was so dark.
I kinda 'went off the charts' to show some 3-d effects, when I wasn't quite sure what was where.
I wanted to set it off as a decrepit (and abandoned?) structure. The job I did on the roof was wildly successful (and by accident). What I was trying to give the impression of was hand-split roof shingles. What's strange is the distortions and 'purpleness' of the front of the eve. That is flat black. I think that happenstance is what turned a neutral piece into a 'dark' one.
I worked on the sky a bit to try and enhance storm clouds, but the black doesn't come across as clouds. With the 'dark nature' of the piece and the suggestion of the tolling bell, the suggestion of spirits damned by the loving and forgiving christian god to eternal torture came to mind.
I'm quite pleased with the way this one turned out. Perhaps, later, I will do it on canvas.
